phone rings...
"Hello, Ricky Gervais speaking... yes... oh, Microsoft you say?.... ... ... ... No, I'm afraid The Office is finished ... ... no, no, I'll never play David Brent again... no... definitely not, no, we have our artistic integrity... no, no, sorry, after the next series of Extras we've decided there'll be no more comedy series, we're moving onto dramas, writing the odd episode for the Simpsons and the podcast... yes that's my final word... ... ... ... sorry, how much did you say?... When can we start?"

BBC jam - DNT...
Hi again all, slowly returning to the land of the living...
I'm very pleased and proud to announce that the first fruit of my labour at the BBC has gone live - a site for Design and Technology for 11-14 year olds, part of the BBC jam service.
Access it here - then click the 'play' button.
Its aim is to encourage kids to have a go with various creative processes, and also to widen their perspectives of the world in order to influence how they might design something. It's open ended, without beginning, middle or end - think concept album rather than top 10 hit - and is something that is there to help when inspiration might be needed.
It's primarily a 'broadband' site (ie it can be a bit slow at times), doesn't work brilliantly on macs (apparenly not our fault, but a personal irk!), and it's my first go at making 'software' rather than just content, so yes, is a bit buggy in places. Despite being sick of looking at it after 14 months, I'm pretty happy about it!
Do let me know what you think, and I'm happy to tackle techie questions from anyone interested.

Time Trumpet causes "UPROAR'!
Being a long-term Armando Iannucci fan, I enjoyed this programme muchly. The Daily Mail did not, what a surprise!
My favourite reader comments:
"This is ablosultely sickening. I have just cancelled my BBC licence fee direct debit in protest. This anti-British organisation has crossed the line and has lost the support of this ex-licence fee payer."
"I pay my £130 a year so the liberal tree-hugging anti-monarchists sitting in their ivory tower at the BBC can foist this garbage on the citizens of this fine nation?"
I've been called a liberal tree-hugger before, for reading the Guardian, and now I work in one of the aforementioned ivory towers it must be true.
Clips here.

Superman returns...
... and can go back from whence he came. What a train smash of a movie! What is wrong with blockbusters these days? Star Wars 1-3, King Kong, MI3, Xmen 3, Pirates 2, etc etc, and now Superman 5: all far too long, dull dull dull, rubbish stories, wooden acting etc.
The good:
- the music
- the opening credits
- a few action sequences - shuttle, bullet in the eye
The bad:
- recycled plot from (vastly superior) original. Luthor wants land, luthor tries to make land, plans to kill people in process. Gets some kryptonite which apparently kills superman, except it doesn't kill him, it just makes him get a bit of a sniffle and he's OK again. Luthor fails, but escapes.
- Was it me or did everyone look a bit bored? Lois Lane was dreadful.
- Ok, so Superman has buggered off for 5 years to find out whether Krypton is still there. It wasn't. He came back. In what way did this contribute to the plot?
- on the same day Superman re-appears after 5 years, Clark also returns from his travels (and gets his old job back!). And no-one even mentions the co-incidence?
- oh my god, the last 15 mins zzzzzz, superman is in hospital, surprise surprise the kid who can throw pianos around is his son, and he's Okaay! hurray!! credits, zzzzzzzzzzz
Please don't make another one. Please.
Of course, this is all opinion. Christian loved it. (he's wrong)

This year's Big Brother...
... really is the dullest yet, in what swamps do they find these people etc etc etc. And still I watch it. I also read about it. Why is this? Why? At the end of my days, I will look back on the countless hours spent watching it, wishing I'd used the time to do something more worthwhile. can't think of anything right now though.
In locoroco news, on the train home yesterday they found both their blue and red friends, hurrah! But then they got eaten by, and had to navigate their way through the innards of, a large monster. But they sang their hearts out through the whole nasty episode, bless the little buggers.
I'm disappearing again for a few days - to Telford for a conference, then to Guildford as dad is being transferred from Ireland into the Royal Surrey Hospital. Much better for him to be nearer home. Wondering whether to write more about it all here - I feel like there's a lot I'd like to express, but maybe it's neither interesting nor appropriate to do it publicly. We'll see.

one more thing...
...for PSP owners. Get Locoroco - unique, and a really really really lovely game.

site - play a level in flash.
New Super Mario Bros on DS isn't too shabby either.

what's this...? a new post...?
... yes, that's two new entries in one day. No, I'm not going to start competing with some of the more prolific of our little blogging family, but at some point I'll put up some new bits and pieces I've been working on for nicktryg.co.uk, made on iweb and my shiny new macbook.
There's one thing I would like to share with you while I'm here. I went to Glasgow on Saturday to watch the football with some work chums. Of course, I expected a little bit of obligatory anti-England banter from our Celtic neighbours, but what I did not expect was a full-on rendition of the Scottish National Anthem when it was all over!
So: England qualify top of their group, then get to the quarter final. Granted, they were playing badly, and didn't deserve to get further (Rooney - sigh...). And somehow getting knocked out by Portugal counts as a Scottish victory!? Sometimes I really do love living here...
Was it churlish of me to be knocking Andy Murray today at work?
